How Does Shockwave Therapy Work?
Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) is an effective mechanical myofascial therapy that can reduce pain and discomfort from painful trigger points (muscle knots) in stubborn muscle groups. This treatment can be used as a standalone or a combination treatment for back pain, shoulder pain and leg pain. Transmission of pain is diminished through neurological mechanisms (inhibition of nociceptors)
Note: No ‘electrical shock’ is ever involved!
This kind of pain relief therapy uses low levels of mechanical energy (rather than electrical waves) to open up biomolecular signal pathways, activate stem cells and stimulate new cell growth. Shockwave therapy is delivered directly onto the skin that covers the affected area.
The resonance (shockwave) is able to penetrate deeply into the affected area, stimulating blood flow to facilitate deep tissue healing and removing inflammation. The shockwaves also assist in the stimulation of pro-collagen synthesis which enables tendon regeneration and repair. Shockwaves also break down scar tissue and or calcification.
Shockwave Therapy Benefits
1. Pain relief: Shockwave Therapy is particularly effective in relieving chronic pain, such as plantar fasciitis, tendinitis, and bursitis. It stimulates the release of endorphins, which are natural pain-relieving substances in the body, providing long-lasting pain relief.
2. Tissue repair and regeneration: The mechanical stress caused by shockwave therapy triggers a healing response in the body. It stimulates the production of collagen, a protein that helps repair damaged tissues and promotes regeneration. This makes it beneficial for conditions like tendinopathies and delayed fracture healing.
3. Improved blood circulation: Shockwave Therapy promotes increased blood flow to the treated area, which aids in the delivery of nutrients and oxygen necessary for healing. It also helps remove metabolic waste products, reducing inflammation and improving tissue function.
4. Non-invasive and minimal side effects: Shockwave Therapy is a non-surgical and non-invasive treatment option. It doesn’t require anaesthesia and has minimal side effects compared to more invasive procedures. Patients may experience mild discomfort during the treatment, but it typically subsides quickly.
It’s important to note that Shockwave Therapy may not be suitable for everyone, and its effectiveness can vary depending on the individual and the specific condition being treated. It’s best to consult with a healthcare professional or specialist to determine if shockwave therapy is appropriate for your particular case.

What happens during an ESWT treatment session?
When you come in for ESWT, wear garments that allow access to the treatment area. We will position you so that we can get to the problem area and keep you comfortable, and then apply a water-based gel to your skin. We will move the handheld applicator over the area while it releases pressure waves, slowly increasing the pulses until we reach your therapeutic level.
We customize the treatment to each clients personal pain tolerance. We will start out at a low level and increase it until we reach your personal five, at which point we’ll hold steady at the therapeutic range for about 2,000 pulses. The process takes about 15 minutes. Most patients describe it as a little uncomfortable but not really painful. If during treatment you find that it is too painful, then the we can make adjustments to the shockwave device to make it more comfortable.
Most clients feel results right away and need only two or three treatments over six to 12 weeks for complete healing and lasting symptom resolution. The beauty of ESWT is that if it is going to work, it likely will start working shortly after the first treatment.
Contraindications or situations in which ESWT
may be inappropriate include:
-

Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is treatment that falls outside of mainstream healthcare. The availability of CAM on the NHS is limited, and in most cases the NHS will not offer such treatments. When a non-mainstream practice is used together with conventional medicine, it's considered "complementary. Complementary therapies are adjunctive: They are used in addition to, not instead of, standard medical care. Complementary therapists are not trained or authorized to diagnose medical conditions. They are trained to recognize "red flag" symptoms and refer patients to appropriate medical professionals when necessary. It's important to remember that Complimentary therapists are not medical doctors and cannot diagnose medical conditions in the same way that a doctor can.
